Kaitiakitanga Rationale

Kaitiakitanga Rationale - Parallax Website

For my Puna project I chose to do ice cream shops around Wellington. I created a fun whimsical pastel brochure which was mostly directed at kids however, for Kaitiakitanga, I wanted to aim to a slightly wider demographic and create a website that was both whimsical and fun but also slightly conservative and less pastel pink. I chose to keep elements such as the handwritten type and the almost childish drawings to keep the playful side whilst using a sleek navigation bar and grid like pages to rein in the design. I wanted to get across the story of how ice cream/gelato was made while at the same time create an informative website that would advertise one of my original sites; Kaffee Eis.

Rationale

1st April
Rationale
Define l Understand l Critique

I decided to base my brochure on ice cream shops as coming from a small town I wasn't used to the amount of choice offered in Wellington. I wanted to work with the atmosphere of the three sites; aiming at specific audiences whilst still aiming the overall booklet at families. As this was families with children I wanted to make it bright and colourful to attract the childrens eyes, I developed the idea of using CMYK colours so the printing would ensure the colours popped as they were made from one sole colour pigment. I also used the simple child friendly graphics and handwritten text to achieve a storybook idea linking in with the kids activity page. During this project I learnt for future projects I should focus on recording my development, forgetting to record my process I ended up with a design different to how I started and no path to how I got there.

Independent Study 6

31st March
Finalising and Printing
Making
I took the ideas and feedback from class critique and finalised my design. Fixing up minor aspects of the brochure including changing up the background textures and changing the columns from two long paragraphs to two shorter but taller ones.
Printing took longer than I thought it would originally, it took 3 black and white test brochures to get the right alignment and a colour copy which unfortunately got screwed up from some sticky stuff attached to the paper. Managed to print properly in the end on matte 190gsm paper.

Class 6.1

31st March
Final class critique
Critique l Making
After discussion of hand in tomorrow, how to print, and what to write in our rationale we broke off and independently focused on our own work while the tutors did individual critique.

Independent Study 5.5

30th March
Fixing up pages
Making l Critique
After printing off my current brochure yesterday I sat down with my fellow VCD flatmates and gave critique to each other. There were a few minor details including some misalignment on the cover and text issues that needed to be fixed up. From there I reviewed all this feedback and information and edited my brochure up to date to be critiqued by the tutors in tomorrows studio class and hopefully be pretty much ready to print as well tomorrow.

Independent Study 5.4

29th March
Finalising mockups and printing
Making
Doing a few touch ups to the design before trying a print out of the layout. I'm starting to get happy with the design and beginning to think it's almost there. From printing i was able to see some minor problems that need fixing before Tuesday and also I'm able to get feedback on Monday.

Independant Study 5.3

28th March
Introduction revisited
Making l Ideate
After deciding to totally redo the introduction/map page I brainstormed a few ideas and came up with a design to incorporate the front cover using ideas from both peers and tutor about ripples of ice cream. Using only the horizontal roads around the areas of my site I put together this design below to flow through to the horizontal rule used on every page throughout the brochure.
As my three sites differential point is the pricing and therefore the target audience I wanted to set the brochure out appealing to each set group, this meaning that the brochure begins slightly conservative and restrained. For example the Movenpick page is more grid-like with the vertical lines representing the poles in the store; through to the kids page which is more loose and although still set in the grid there are more parts breaking that grid.
